Pressemitteilung, 15.5.2019

Fridays for Future and Youth for Climate call out for actions in front of European institutions #VoteClimate #NoEuropeWithoutUs #EuropeForClimate

On May 24th Fridays for Future Frankfurt and Youth For Climate Luxembourg, Strasbourg and Brussels will march up to the European Central Bank (ECB), European Investment Bank (EIB), European Parliament and European Council during the pan-European climate strikes on the occasion of the European elections.

On May 24th climate strikes will take place all over Europe. On the weekend of the European elections, young people from all European countries will take to the streets to send a strong signal to both politicians and citizens: European elections are climate elections!

Climate change is a global phenomenon that can't be solved on a national basis. Therefore European elections probably are the last chance to vote for climate and set the course for a livable future.

“Even though or especially because many of us aren't allowed to vote yet it's even more important that we raise our voice and march up for the climate, for our future, with thousands and thousands protesting: creatively, colorful and impossible to ignore.”, says Gilles Vandaele from Brussels.

Pan-European strikes are planned at the domiciles of the ECB, EIB, the European Parliament and the European Council located in Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Strasbourg, and Brussels. The local branches of Fridays for Future and Youth for Climate decided to march on these institutions to draw attention to their power in terms of climate policy and demand immediate action. European Union has to take the threat of climate change seriously and put climate policy above any decision. The European Parliament and the European Council have the power to pass and execute laws that will obligate countries to take action for reaching the goals of the Paris Agreement and ECB and EIB can use their power to initiate a European green new deal and stop subsidizing any climate-damaging industries.

To support this mobilization the organizing committee invites every city to devote a significant part of its demonstration (beginning, end, stage) to marching in front of a place of national place of power united under the motto #VoteClimate and demand a consistent implementation of the IPCC goals.

The very fact that there are emergency meetings about Brexit and not about climate change demonstrates that there’s an urgent need for change.

“We’re calling all voters to think about their and our future and vote for climate, to give their vote to parties committed to our demands.”, says Brice Montagne from Luxembourg.

The international organizing committee of Fridays for Future and Youth for Climate is expecting thousands of school strikers and other protesters especially because many neighboring local Fridays for Future/Youth for Climate groups have already agreed in mobilizing towards these four cities.

“We’re really looking forward to the 24th of May, even though our demonstration has a very serious reason.”, says Helena Marschall from Frankfurt. “The emergency of climate crisis brings us all together and we're hoping to create awareness for how important these elections are - and maybe we’ll even reach some of the decision-makers in the institutions we're marching up to.”, adds Léo Boehm from Strasbourg.

In Frankfurt, the demonstration will start at 12 p.m. at Willy-Brandt-Platz in the city center and end at the ECB headquarters to highlight the ECB’s influence on climate policy. Besides several actions during the demonstration, the organizing committee has prepared a great side program with music, food, speeches and booths of other climate justice and environmental groups.

As a highlight, Prof. Dr. John Schellnhuber, one of the world‘s most renowned climate scientists, will join Fridays for Future onstage for a speech.

We invite all young people and everyone who cares about future to join our European strikes for climate justice in Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Strasbourg and Brussels or to support this mobilization by marching in front of their own city's national places of power and question the positions of European election's candidates.
